Cooper Union Vertical Flight - Senior Project

Designing, building, testing, and breaking a drone.

I completed this report and accompanying poster as part of my senior project. The goal of the project was to design and build a drone that could take off vertically and fly horizontally around a course. Although the testing phase of our drone ended in failure at the competition, I definitely learned more from that failure than I would have if we had succeeded on the first attempt. I will forever appreciate the hard work that our team put into pushing our learning forward by bringing our design to life. My main takeaways from the project were our lack of follow-through on project management and our neglect of the importance of team dynamics. Even though we created a realistic schedule and discussed the importance of delivering quickly, we all let our commitments fall through in one way or another. I realized how essential it is to excel at meeting commitments and sticking to deadlines, while also remaining flexible when facing challenges that arise in the engineering process. It is also key to cultivate a culture of integrity within the team and maintain continuous communication of project status and roadblocks.
